Last week I was part of a group of bloggers who converged on the Town Center Macy’s in Leawood to learn about Chanel skincare and dramatic eye looks. Our hosts Rance (a regional Chanel rep) and Blake, the Macy’s cosmetics department sales manager were excited to teach us, and we were all giddy just seeing what they had on display.
If you haven’t been to the Chanel counter at Town Center Macy’s it’s worth the trip—even if you’re downtown like me. It’s the only Macy’s in the metro with a Chanel counter, and it’s a beautiful, spacious cosmetics department. The Chanel counter is near the back, before you reach the escalators, showcasing the full cosmetics and skincare lines in their iconic black and white.
Personally I’ve had great experiences with Chanel cosmetics and skin care in the past, but primarily lipsticks. I was really interested to learn more about their skincare and have the opportunity to play with their eye shadows! As you know I am a big ol’ nerd so I could go on and on, but I’ll give you the highlights and show you the dramatic eye look I got to apply!
Highlights: Chanel shares in the long French tradition of caring for the skin to create a beautiful canvas on which to apply makeup. One thing Rance told us as we prepped our faces is that eye cream really is best applied on the orbital bone under the eye only. Not all the way up under the eye to the lower eyelid—unless you want to risk giving yourself under eye bags and potentially milia from over-moisturizing. I had no idea I had been doing it wrong!
We had products from the Le Lift collection, which is all about lifting, firming and keeping everything in place. Unless you’re 19, it never hurts to start thinking of using good skincare to prevent issues before they begin. Chanel has over 300 dermatologists on staff, so there’s no question the science behind their skin care is well tested.
We also prepped our skin with product from the Hydra Beauty collection. This line features very lightweight, but moisturizing products with a patented micro-droplet delivery system for Camilla Oil Extract for exceptional hydration. It’s so silky and sinks right in. I liked the Hydra Beauty Micro Serum best—if you’re oily it’s likely you won’t even need another moisturizer.
Oh, also, we did our eyes before we applied the Chanel CC cream so if you have any shadow fall on your cheeks, you can clean it up before face makeup is applied. Genius!
After we used concealer to prep our eyelids, Rance showed us that tight lining doesn’t have to mean poking yourself in the eye. We used the Stylo Yeux Waterproof liner in 88 Noir Intense. If you aim the eyeliner between your lashes to fill in the gaps between the hairs on the top and bottom, and not putting eyeliner on the red inner rim of your eyelids themselves, it creates the dramatic look without the discomfort.
I then choose a Les 4 Ombres Quadra Eyeshadow in 232 Tisse Venitien, which is great for hazel eyes like mine. Definitely a daring look for me and very fun! They have so many options, you’re bound to find one you’ll love. Chanel has four signature eye looks, and Kristen Stewart is stunning in all of them as the new face of Chanel cosmetics. Check out the guide to creating each look, as well as behind-the-scenes videos and photos by the legend Mario Testino here. Seriously, Kristen Stewart has never looked this good.
I tried lash primers back in the day first time they were all the rage. They were often ok, but not worth the extra time. I think I am back on board though because the Chanel Nourishing Mascara Base under the mascara was really stupendous, as you can see. Thickness, separation and length with very little effort. I was a skeptic but now I’m a convert!
Excuse the phone photos of the final look, everyone was so busy getting photos that I didn’t get to ask anyone to take one with the good camera. You’re seeing me with indoor and outdoor light above. My skin looks so luminous with the CC Cream! When I wear such a dramatic eye look, I don’t like to do a red lip, so I swapped it for their new gloss, Lévres Scintillantes Aqua Glossimer in Sahara. I am not a gloss fan, but even before the compliments, I was marveling at how light and non-sticky it feels. I guess I am a gloss convert, too!
Final thoughts: I’m completely obsessed with that Joues Contraste powder blush in Malice, by the way. It’s the perfect, juicy coral-pink and a little goes a long way! Chanel is all about luxury, pampering, and scientifically-proven ingredients that really perform. I was very impressed and my sensitive skin loved it. I might even give up my cat eye liner and red lipstick to try this look more often! I can’t say enough nice things about Macy’s Town Center in Leawood—I’ve fallen in love with Chanel all over again!
